Easy Spanish
Music Challenge

Take our musical challenge this October! Over a six-week period we’ll share two new songs each week for our community members to listen to and learn about. We’ll be choosing each song for its cultural, musical and lyrical merits that you’ll surely appreciate, and this time, picking tunes from Mexico.

Our music challenge starts October 13th and runs until Novermber 23rd. Learners of all Spanish levels are welcome, and it’s possible to take the challenge at your own pace.

How to Participate

Step 2: Join us on Discord

Once you’re a member, make sure to create an account on Discord and connect it to your Patreon account.

You’ll find our weekly musical-themed messages and tasks in the #🎵music-challenge channel.

Step 1: Become a Member

Our music challenge, including our weekly discussions and special exercises, is open to all Easy Spanish members, starting with the Learner Membership level. If you join at a higher membership level, you’ll receive some additional perks — more on that below.

Signing up takes just a few minutes and it’s easy to cancel your membership at any time.

🎵
How Does It Work?

During the six weeks of the music challenge, each week will follow the same pattern:

Listen

Each week, Mondays and Thursdays, we'll reveal a new song that the team have selected for you. You can listen to the songs at home, or take them on a rainy walk. Don't worry if you miss a day; you’ll be able to catch up later and go at your own pace.

Read + Discuss

After you've listened, join the conversation on our Discord server. It's a space to discuss your thoughts, ask questions, and express how you felt about the song. You're free to contribute as much or as little as you'd like, and enjoy reading other members’ answers.

Reflect

For our Podcast Members and higher tiers, there's a bonus: each Friday you'll get a bonus podcast episode where Pau and Carla give their personal take on the songs of the week.

Write

Each song will be accompanied by an exercise or two that put your comprehension and vocabulary to the test. There will also be a fun listening exercise to help you pick up all the lyrics.

Speak… and sing!

Once the challenge has finished, we will have an online zoom party where there may even be some karaoke involved… This year we’re inviting all our members to participate.

📆
Our Weekly Plan

  • Monday + Thursday: Listen to each song and take part in our discord discussions.

  • Monday → Sunday: Complete your exericises and comment on your peers’ posts.

  • Each Friday: Bonus Podcast Episode (for Podcast Members)

  • At the end of the challenge: Online Karaoke party to celebrate (for all members)

FAQ

  • Yes, no problem at all! You can join our challenge at any time up until December. All the previous discussions and tasks will be available for you to catch up at your own pace, for at least one month after.

  • The Easy Spanish Music Challenge is an intensive 6-week community event, based around listening to 12 different Spanish-language songs and engaging with them in different ways.

  • To join the challenge, you'll need to become a member of Easy Spanish in any membership level for the duration of the challenge. Once you're a member, you'll get access to our Discord server, where our discussions and writing tasks will be conducted.

To receive the additional bonus podcast episodes, you'll need to sign up for the Podcast Membership level or higher.

To participate in the weekly conversation sessions on Zoom, you'll need to sign up for the Conversation Membership.

  • Each of the songs will be revealed during the course of the challenge on our Discord platform. We’ll simply provide a link to the song on Youtube, and you’ll be able to find it on your favourite music listening platform. At the end of each week we’ll provide a round up of the songs and course materials via patreon (and e-mail).

  • Membership is necessary as it helps us run and support the Easy Spanish community. This includes managing the Discord community, providing weekly tasks, producing additional podcast episodes for certain membership tiers, and coordinating Zoom calls. It also helps us continue creating quality content for everyone in the Easy Spanish community.

  • The cost of the Easy Spanish membership depends on the membership level you select.

If you’re already an Easy Spanish member, there is no additional cost.

  • Absolutely! We offer a monthly subscription option that you can cancel at any time. This allows you to participate in the challenge and also experience other benefits of being an Easy Spanish member for a month or two.

  • Discord is a free chat app that you can use on your computer and phone. We use it to communicate and chat with our members. To join, you'll need to link your Patreon account to your Discord account — it takes less than 5 minutes and we have a tutorial on how to do this here.

Once you're in, you'll see a variety of text channels where you can chat about everything from everyday life to philosophical topics in Spanish.

You'll also see a section called "10-Song Challenge" — this is where we'll leave you our listening and writing tasks.

  • Yes! The 10-Song Challenge is open to learners of all levels.

We have chosen the songs based on their musical and cultural merit, but also with Spanish learners in mind: we’ve made sure the lyrics are both interesting and not too challenging to actually hear in the song.

  • Each week involves listening to a song a few times, participating in a forum discussion, and completing a writing task.

The listening should only take a short amount of time, perhaps 5-10.

You can spend as much or as little time as you like on the discussions and the writing task, and take them at your own pace. For someone wanting to participate each day in an intensive way, we recommend investing at least 20-30 minutes per day.

  • The discussions are conducted in a forum on Discord. After listening to each day’s song, members can share their thoughts, ask questions, or respond to others' insights about the songs. The atmosphere is friendly and open, with everyone encouraged to participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable.

  • Each week, we’ll provide a few extra vocab and/or writing tasks related to the songs of the week. The tasks vary and might involve giving a personal response, completing a vocabulary or listening exercise, or something creative. These tasks are designed to help take you from passively listening into actively using the language.

  • Yes, part of the learning process is sharing your work and receiving feedback from your peers. After completing each writing task, you can post it on Discord. Other members can then provide constructive comments, creating an interactive and collaborative learning experience.

Note that the Easy Spanish team cannot provide individual feedback on your writing or correct specific mistakes as part of the challenge. If this is important to you, consider working with a tutor or tandem partner who can help you correct the writing you produce while participating in the challenge.

  • If you’re in the Podcast Membership or a higher membership level, you will receive a bonus podcast episode in your private podcast feed every Friday, including an interactive transcript and our vocab helper. Here's a tutorial on how to subscribe to your private podcast feed.

These bonus episodes provide further insights into the week's story, with discussions between Pau and Carla about their thoughts and feelings about the songs (as well as many digressions into other topics). Each episode is between 10 and 20 minutes long and will be released in addition to our regular Easy Spanish podcast episodes.

  • If you are already a member and want to upgrade your membership to access additional benefits like bonus podcast episodes or Zoom calls, you can do so through the membership settings on Patreon.

  • That's completely fine. The Music Challenge is self-paced, so if you miss a week or fall behind, you can always catch up later. The important thing is to enjoy the process and learn at a pace that's comfortable for you.

  • Perhaps! Please let us know how you found the experience and if you have any ideas for future improvements. You can also suggest songs that might be a good choice for future editions of the program.

  • If you have a question that we didn't cover in these FAQs, feel free to reach out to us through our contact form or ask in the Discord community. We're here to help!
